History of The Practice
The practice premises at 42 Father Griffin Road was originally the home of the O’Byrne family. The house and the adjoining shop was built in 1935. In March 1968, Dr. O’Byrne was appointed as dispensary doctor to Galway No. 1 area and commenced practice at the premises. His son in law, Dr. Kieran Whyte, qualified from UCG (now NUI Galway) in 1988 and worked initially in Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry, Northern Ireland. From there he worked in Queensland Australia before returning to Galway and joining Dr. O’Byrne in 1992.

Dr. Kieran Whyte
Mb Bch BAO , FPC, DMH, Dch, DMSK., MICGP., M.Med Sci., FSEM.
Dr. Whyte has been serving the community as a GP for over 30 years. He graduated from UCG (now NUIG) in 1988 with MB Bch BAO qualifications. After completing his training in Altnagelvin Hospital, Derry, NI, Dr. Whyte spent 1 year working in Australia before returning to Galway to work with Dr. O’Byrne in 1992. Dr. Whyte has gained many post graduate qualifications including Certificates in Family Planning and Traffic Medicine, Diplomas in Mental Health, Musculoskeletal Injury and Management and Child Health and a Masters of Medical Science, Membership of the Irish College of GPs and is a member of the Faculty of SPORTS and Exercise Medicine. He has been an aeromedical examiner since 1995 and seafarers examiner for many years.

Dr. Kieran Whyte is an avid sportsperson and is a member of local sport clubs, including Galway Triathlon Club and Galway City Harriers. Kieran has completed many endurance events: Marathons in Dublin, Belfast, New York and Boston; IRONMAN Sweden and Challenge Galway full distance Ironman events; and he has twice completed the Galway Bay Swim from Clare to Galway.
Bachelor in Nursing Science
Emer gradutated as a Nurse from the Regional Hospital Galway (now UCHG) in 1988. She continued working in the Regional Hospital before moving to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry, NI. She has been working at the GP practice in Galway since 1992. Emer’s specialities include Asthma and Diabetes care.

Emer is an avid runner and is a member of Galway City Harriers. She has completed numerous running races and events all over the world, including marathons in New York
